and the unimaginable damage from superstorm sandy and more. >>> we'll start with another winter storm getting ready to wallop a large swath of the country. maria larosa has the details. >> it places like arkansas just a few days ago under blizzard warnings. now we're talking about freezing rain advisories. also, the winter weather advisories. you see the advisories stretch back into the ohio valley, back into the northeast. that's basically the trail of the snow with this next system. so over the next 24 to 48 hours we'll see it develop. it will continue through the south with thunderstorms and showers. not to the extent of the severe weather with the last round, but you can see enough cold air you start to see the snow develop from ohio to pennsylvania. moving into d.c. overnight tonight, into philadelphia and new york by saturday morning and on up into boston by saturday afternoon. it's a quick mover. generally speaking, the snow totals will be on the light side. we'll start in the next 24 hours. ohio valley, indianapolis, you could end up with an additional 3 to 6 inches of snowfall. as it moves

have to put that in perspective the sandy supplemental bill started out $60 billion. one storm could wipe out all the savings or. adam: that sandy supplemental bill is 60 billion, 45 billion according to taxpayers for common sense is stimulus spending that doesn't involve the hurricane. dan, i will come back to you after we listen to sound bite from harry reid, senate majority leader commenting on the negotiations today. here is what he said. >> okay. we had a long meeting in the white house. it was very constructive. we hope that it will be bear fruit but that is what we hope ad lot. i think that the next 2 hours will be very instructive what we're able to accomplish. >> was there progress? discussion of a concrete proposal? >> we talked about a lot of things. there is no concrete proposal at this time. we have a number of different directions we'll try to take and we're going to see what can be worked out. >> will you work on a piece of legislation? >> pardon me? >> is it a good sign or bad sign you guys are not talking much after this meeting?. >> i hooe everything is a good sign.

, since the sandy hook elementary school shootings on december 14th, there have been almost 250 gun deaths in north america or just about 13 gun deaths for each day, and even this morning we learned there was a shooting at a police station in camden, new jersey. so, you know, you mentioned gun control as an issue that the president needed to really get working on pretty quickly in january. how is that going to compete with other agenda items and how will the president and i would also say the outside groups really keep the pressure on to make sure that something meaningful happens? >> you know, that's a very good question, karen, and in a sense i wonder if it's already too late. if you don't act on these things quickly, people stop talking about it. the gun rights activists and the nra don't stop talking about it. they regain the traction they had momentarily lost. there is still hope for that issue, but the president really needs to move on that in january wile also remembering that the first three priorities are the economy, the economy, and the economy. >> how -- i think part of the sad

that will give much needed relief from the storm sandy. we'll talk about that more in a minute. we are urging the house to put this bill on the floor quickly. we're asking mr. boehner to do that. it would unconscienable without voting on sandy. and the strong bipartisan support -- we got 12 votes from the republicans. the fact that three democrats that couldn't be here were here. we could have had 64 votes. we still got more than 60 even with those three absences shows how important this bill was, the strong waurn vote gives an impetus to the bill and says to speaker boehner, this bill has bipartisan support not only in the senate but we know in the house. please move it. do not ignore the needs of new yorkers, new jerseyites and others who have suffered. we have a desperate situation still in new york. we have billions and billions of dollars in damage. we have homeowners waiting, watching to see if this bill would pass so that they could begin to think of getting help to rebuild their homes. we have small business owners, watching, waiting to see if this bill will pass, to see if they can g

the sandy supplemental legislation. hopefully they will pass that tomorrow or by saturday. certainly, the house of representatives needs to address that supplemental to give relief to those that were savaged by sandy in the worst storm that has hit the northeast perhaps in history. the violence against women act passed senate overwhelmingly, something that we could work on today. the farm bill expires on december 31. milk prices will spike substantially if that bill is left to expire. mr. cantor indicated that would be addressed before we left here at the end of the 112th congress. that is some six days, a week off, four days until december 31, obviously. the foreign intelligence surveillance act, to continue making this country safe and secure and empower our people to protect us from those who would harm us, that bill is being considered on the senate today on the floor. the senate is here working. the house is not. we had a pro-forma session -- a session without substance or solutions. postal reform passed overwhelmingly in the senate. we can address that issue as well. the altern

't believe there's anyone in this chamber that doesn't understand the devastating impact of sandy on the northeast and the pain and the suffering that has come from that. i don't think there's anyone in this chamber that doesn't understand that this is an emergency supplemental appropriation that is needed now to address this pain and suffering and help rebuild and help provide the relief necessary to these people and businesses and others in the north east. and we want do that. but the bill before us presented by the democrats -- the presiding officer: could we have order, please. mr. schumer: could we have order, please. i can't hear the senator from indiana. mr. coats: the bill presented by the other side throws out $60-plus billion to address not just immediate needs but also future needs for future storms and even unrelated issues not related to sandy. the coats alternative, which i hope to gain support for, documents what is needed, takes that documentation provided by fema, s.b.a., all the agencies involved and more than generously compensates for what is needed between now
